The CSCS Girls Volleyball team packed a lot of volleyball into the past week, facing a challenging early-season schedule that tested the Lions and provided plenty of opportunities to grow.
CSCS enters the new week with a 2–5 record, but the final numbers do not tell the entire story.
The week began against Eagle Ridge Academy, where the Lions fell 3–0, but all three sets were decided by three points or fewer. CSCS battled to scores of 28–26, 25–22 and 25–22, staying within striking distance throughout the match.
Then came a full Saturday of competition at the Mesa Ridge Grizzly Classic.
The Lions opened tournament play against Widefield. While CSCS came up short 2–0, seniors Breckyn Gooden and Jayne Glojek provided strong leadership. Gooden recorded 14 digs and two aces, while Glojek contributed 12 assists, 11 digs and a block.
CSCS responded in its next match.
CSCS 2 — VISTA RIDGE 1
The Lions battled Vista Ridge through three sets and came away with a hard-fought 2–1 victory, earning their second win of the season.
It was exactly the kind of response the Lions want to build on: regroup, compete and find a way to finish.
The tournament continued with a 2–0 loss to host Mesa Ridge before CSCS finished the day in another three-set battle, this time against Pueblo County.
PUEBLO COUNTY 2 — CSCS 1
The Lions pushed a Pueblo County team that has won four of its last five matches but came up just short, 2–1.
Once again, CSCS received contributions throughout the lineup. Glojek finished with 14 assists, eight digs and three aces, helping the Lions remain competitive until the end.
Saturday’s tournament provided four matches in a single day and a valuable early-season test for a team still finding its rhythm.
A 2–5 record is not where the Lions ultimately want to be, but this part of the season is about discovering what it will take to become the team they want to be when the biggest matches arrive.
There are encouraging signs.
The Lions have shown they can compete in tight sets. They have responded after difficult matches. They have received leadership from their upperclassmen and contributions throughout the roster. Most importantly, they continue to get opportunities to practice the things that matter at CSCS: Christ-centeredness, character, community, being competent, and competing well.
Wins matter. So does what a team becomes while pursuing them.
The Lions return to the court Tuesday night on the road against SkyView Academy, ready for another opportunity to compete, grow and represent CSCS well.
